Pender Harbour

Some of our trip has been meeting with childhood friends with the conversation from my end going "do you remember ".
The names will always be anonymous.
Do you remember the kid who had his finger cut off by his brother with a hatchet. Yes, I was  there he replied. The brothers, 7-10 years old, both had hatchets , and one was blindfolded, who knows why, but he wasn't the one who lost the end of his finger. Rushing home with the bleeding boy, the parents quickly sent them back to look for the finger. No luck, one finger is an inch shorter.
My friend was a movie buff( the story to his parents), traveling to New Westminster quite often, by train. He was 10 so he didn't have to pay any fare. It was a rather short distance, to the  train yard where they hopped a freight. They went first class as well, because CNN would ship new cars by train, unlocked, which would allow them a panoramic view from the top tier of cars. I laugh now every time I see a train, thinking of some 10 year sitting in a new car, just his head showing.
Now his good friend not to be outdone, had a rope swing that arced out over the train tracks. Fine, but they always waited till the train came along and tried to see who could swing out in front of the oncoming train observing the whites of the engineers eyes, horn blaring. They are alive to talk about it.
We are sitting here in a cafe, started talking to the next table, and none of the above was new for him, he was the  same vintage from Surrey. Mom's sent us out for the day, knowing we would be home when we were hungry, never asking where we had been.

The car show when we finished laughing

Similar to the  bosses car I drove for deliveries, right out of high school. Only warnings, no tickets

Amy had a truck like this once, at least the same year and model.

  1. We are a sum of our memories. Like an avid collector, every so often we take them down, dust them off and either peruse them or share them with the like minded. How great to share with folks who may have actually been there. You can see the flashes of time and age in their eyes, as they see in ours. Must be great to experience them in a time when you are again somewhat fancy free!

Remember one of those truck in our old neighborhood. Great for drive-ins.
